Lost

Visiting Chichen Itza

With a private tour guide

Of Mayan ancestry

gives one a candid view

Of these lost tribes

He makes a joke

“Not chicken pizza”

We laugh

His “History” is told

We listen as it slowly unfolds

And is sold

To willing tourists

Driving from Cancun to the ruins

Reveals bitterness in his tone

As we drive through a small town

With a Catholic Church

The Spanish conquest

Brought a new religion

And destroyed

An ancient civilization
I walked the ruins

Peacefully imagining the people

Who lived here long ago

They had both science and superstition

Are we so different?
